Full Description
Site of several archaeological features, removed by quarrying. Two possible enclosures, lying in close proximity with each other, were identified from aerial photographs. One was circular, the other more oval, with two possible circular huts within it. A walkover survey was carried out by GUARD in 1997 ahead of proposed quarrying, which confirmed these features as a possible prehistoric enclosure with probable internal features, and a possible cairn, although did not locate any internal hut circles. The survey also located another hut-circle and possible standing stone of possible prehistoric date, a group of boulders suggested to be the remains of a recumbent stone circle, and other features including three trackways, a boundary line, and clearance cairns of likely post-medieval or modern date. Subsequent evaluation by GUARD in March 1998 revealed that several sites initially identified as prehistoric were more likely to be post-medieval or natural, including the features within the enclosure which appeared to be a natural accumulation of boulders. The possible recumbent stone circle appeared not to be a stone circle although there was evidence of human activity. A watching brief was carried out in September 2001 during soil removal in the southern sector of the quarry - an area between NJ7293708686, NJ7306408701 and NJ 7293308596 (and south of an area subject to a watching brief in 2000) revealed no archaeological features. Recent aerial photographs show that the area has now been quarried.
