A number of artefacts, including a possible medieval seal, coins and other metallic objects, were found by two illegal metal-detectorists in a field to the south of Sandyhill Road, Banff in the 1990s.

A number of artefacts, including a possible medieval seal, coins and other metallic objects, were found by two illegal metal-detectorists in a field to the south of Sandyhill Road, Banff in the 1990s. A local resident, who saw some of the objects, contacted the police, but by the time they arrived the detectorists had gone. None of the artefacts were recorded or reported. A trial trenching evaluation was subsequently carried out in January 1993 by SUAT at the request of AAS. In total, 17 test pits of 1m square, three trenches of 1 x 4 m, and 19 trenches of 1 x 10 m were excavated. No archaeological features were encountered, but artefacts were recovered from the topsoil. These artefacts included clay pipe fragments, pottery and glass sherds and iron nails. The assemblage is predominantly 19th century in date. The absence of any identifiable features in the field suggests that the finds have been coming from a burgh midden that has been spread as fertiliser across the field.
