A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by CFA Archaeology in November 2018 within the corridor of a pipeline route, in an area of recorded cropmarks (NJ65NE0040). Six trenches were excavated, and archaeological remains recorded in three of these. Trench 46 contained six pits, three of which were excavated although no finds were recovered. A single pit was recorded in Trench 48. The 9 features recorded in Trench 51 included two pits which were excavated although no artefacts were found, and a linear feature which contained some burnt bone, probably animal. Further excavation was carried out by CFA in July-August 2019 and recorded an extensive spread of features, many of them pits. These are considered likely to be of prehistoric date although their function is unclear. Several groups of features formed complexes of intercutting features with some evidence for burning. One four-poster structure was identified. A relatively small number of finds were recovered, including animal and burnt bone, one piece of daub, one sherd of prehistoric pottery, two lithics and a number of possibly worked stones. One pit yielded over 100 charcoal fragments.
