An archaeological assessment and evaluation was carried out by GUARD in March 1998 in advance of a new industrial park, which included the a cropmark of a rectangular structure.

An archaeological assessment and evaluation was carried out by GUARD in March 1998 in advance of a new industrial park, which included the a cropmark of a rectangular structure. No new features were identified during a rapid walkover survey, although some fields were under crop. Some finds were recovered including worked flint, medieval pottery and iron slag. Subsequently 23 trial trenches were dug in six fields, although only one produced archaeological material, namely Trench 20 at the northern end of the area investigated. The results from Trench 1, positioned to investigate the cropmark feature, showed this to be of natural origin. However, a trench uncovered a small ironworking furnace and a fragment of a shale bracelet. Further excavation by GUARD in May 1998 uncovered metal-working slag and areas of burning indicating hearths and a small iron-smelting complex, which was subsequently excavated (see NJ05NE0024). A small clearance cairn to the south of the Tarras farm was also investigated, and concluded to be the result of relatively modern agricultural clearance.
