Full Description

Two Pictish Class I symbol stones and a stone inscribed with runes, now displayed in Knockando Parish Church boundary wall (NJ14SE0028). The stones are said to have come from the old burial ground of Pulvrenan (NJ24SW0003) on the bank of the Spey below Knockando House. The smaller of the two Pictish stones is a slab of gneiss, circa 1.44 m x 0.55 m (4 ft 9 x 1 ft 10), bearing a single disc with central radials, and two crescents and V-rods. The other Pictish stone is a larger slab of diorite, circa 1.9 m x 0.45 m (6 ft 3 x 1 ft 6), with a serpent and a mirror with double disc pattern handle, although they are now rather too weathered to comprehend easily. The third stone, inscribed with runes, measures 1.31 m x 0.57 m. The runic inscriptions are now very worn.
