Description
Test pits excavated in a transect from the Square to the south of the village. Test pits in the square suggested deposits of material had been made perhaps for levelling when the Square was made into a communal space and all finds from this area indicated activity no earlier than the 18th century. Most of the garden test pits consisted of landscaped deposits and did not demonstrate activity prior to the 18th century. One area south of the village had archaeological features, including at Nicol Lodge. The area around Ashvale was targeted to investigate the findsposts of Pictish symbol stones and and human remains marked on the OS 1st edition map. A large open area trench was excavated west of Ashvale. Charcoal samples from Ashvale and Nicol Lodge. Director: REAP Auspices: UOA
