Abstract/Summary

Programme of archaeological works comprising evaluation, watching brief and excavation carried out by AOC Archaeology in advance of a proposed retail development. This recorded activity from later medieval to the present. The area behind the Gallowgate was clearly of importance for industrial activities including leather-working/tanning and metalworking in the later medieval and early post-medieval period. The quantity of artefacts and ecofacts recovered from this medieval urban excavation are nationally significant.
