Full Description
Church, still in ecclesiastical use. This is the third location that a church dedicated to St James was erected, having formerly occupied a site by the old High United Free Church before its unification with St Gerardine's. The church was originally a United Free church, built in 1887-8 to a design by A. Marshall Mackenzie. St James's Church of Scotland (previously a U.F. church) moved to the site in the late 1960s, after its previous home (at NJ 2360 7087, NJ27SW0013) had been declared structurally unsound in 1966. The church has a striking octagonal tower with spire at its south east corner, decorated with slender lancets at its base, lancets at the belfry and gablets of quatrefoils around the spire's base. The interior of the church was reconstructed in 1932-3 by George Bennett Mitchell and Son after being destroyed by fire. The church is home to some fine stained glass windows, including a large, striking, window in the gallery entitled 'Miraculous Draught of Fishes' designed in 1971 by Charles Florence. The subject matter is apt since St James has traditionally been the church of the town's fishermen. In the two North lancets are windows depicted saints designed by Walter Pearce in 1934. In the main entrance an inscribed wood memorial plaque to commemorate parishioners who died in World War II is flanked by a pair of bronze plaques depicted soldiers, with heads bowed.
