Full Description
Site of St. James's Parish Church. This site represents the second of three sites that the church has occupied (see NJ27SW0031 for earlier site and NJ27SW0032 for present church). Completed in 1881, and occupied until structural problems were identified in 1966. Possibly designed by architect A. Marshall Mackenzie. Gothic revival, with stone spire and fine windows and doorway. Known as the fisherman's Kirk. The Royal Commission report that the structure was demolished after being destroyed by fire (reported 2001), however this could refer to one of the other sites of the church. A garage now occupies the site, but traces of the church remain in the decorative pillars either side of the forecourt.
Period Notes
Built 1888; appointment of Mackenzie as architect 7 January 1887; declared structurally unsound in 1966.
