Full Description

Mansion house, now in use as a care home. Originally late Georgian, remodelled in late classic manner circa 1870. It is a large symmetrical 3-storey ashlar fronted mansion with set back single storey wings. There is a canted square-columned porch with half circular column insets at the splayed bays and a balustraded parapet, and which is flanked by shallow rectangular tripartite bays at the ground floor. At the second floor is a central Venetian window in the central pedimented bay with bracketed iron balcony. Piended slate roof with central flat and decorative iron rail crown, and broad ashlar stacks with shaped hanches. The north and south wings were originally identical, pedimented with lunettes. The north wing retains its tripartite bay, the south wing has a later canted bay. Short links with arched windows. The house is shown on Wood's 1822 map with its present plan shape, and also on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. There is an entrance gate lodge house to the south west (NO56SE0157) and a garden house to the north (NO56SE0159).
