Full Description
Remains of a World War II airfield, in use by July 1941 although construction had not been finished by this date. It was attacked by a single Ju88 on November 30, 1941. The airfield hosted fighter squadrons for rest periods, the last of which departed March 12 1945. In June 1941 ten pillboxes were listed for construction at the airfield, nine of which were for defence against airborne troops landing on the airfield. The airfield closed soon after and was auctioned off in September 1959. Of the 12 dispersal pens and eight Blister hangars around the perimeter there is no trace. The control tower was demolished. The operations block can be found about two miles down the road towards the road. Part of the airfield now belongs to Bond helicopters for training flights. On the east and southeast side are the remains of huts and air raid shelters. Pill-boxes stand at NK0759 4763, NK0739 4741, NK0727 4720, NK0738 4681, NK0756 4673. Remains of the airfield Battle HQ stand at NK 08010 46961 (see NK04NE0124: see also NK04NE0125.
