Full Description

Parish church, which replaced the old parish church of Newhills (NJ80NE0011), designed by John Smith, opened in 1830. It is rectangular, 4-bay, of pinned squared rubble. The interior is almost unaltered and includes a pulpit with precentor's box and sounding board, and original pews with estate names. On the gallery front are the Arms of Hay and Seaton. It is possible that the bell in the new church was brought from the old church as it was dated to 1788 and it showed marks of use elsewhere. passim). The new church had a coat of arms of the former patron, the earl of Fife and Lord James Hay of Seaton as well as a stained glass window commemorating the founder, George Davidson. Other windows in the church commemorate those who preached in the church since its opening in 1830. One panel has St. Matthew's symbol of the ox and the other St. Mark's lion. Another window is a memorial to Mrs. Smith, wife of Dr. James Smith, who was founder of Newhills home. The remaining panel of this window has St. Luke and an outstretched eagle. The session house was by Wiliam Henderson 1866.
