Full Description
Episcopal church built in the mid 19th century, and which has remained in use since and is little altered. The church was built by John Henderson in 1849 in an Early English style and comprises an aisleless nave, south porch, tower and chancel. The spire was added in 1870. It was built in coursed granite rubble with contrasting red sandstone quoins and surrounds. The roofs and spire are slated, although the spire was added twenty years after the church opened. The tower of the church is a sturdy, square structure in two stages with the spire on top. The first stage has corner buttresses and lancet windows. Set into the outer walls are a number of old stones supposed to have come from the Priory of Ardlogy (Fyvie Priory NJ73NE0004) .An arched recess in the north wall holds a finial stone that is likely to have come from Fyvie Priory, as is the piscina. A small crown stone at the west entrance is also said to have come from the priory. The three cross stones set under the east window and the panel over the entrance porch are probably of later date, perhaps 15th – 16th century. The hall to the north was in used as the church hall until the 1960s (NJ73NE0155). The graveyard contains the Commonwealth war grave of Private Arthur McGillivray, Seaforth Highlanders, died 29 December 1941.
