Full Description

Stone, which traditionally marks the site where a Danish general named Camus or Cambus was slain in a battle. It measures 2.21m in girth. It is doubtful whether the general or the battle ever existed. Excavation around the stone was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in 2018 as part of a trial trenching evaluation of several fields (NJ71NE0216). On the north and east sides this revealed the sub-circular cut in which the stone had been erected. Small chocking stones were recorded under the main standing stone. No dating evidence for erection of the stone was found, but the stratigraphy and nature of the cut suggests it was fairly recent.
