Full Description

Graveyard and site of a church, as depicted on OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. This was the original parish church dedicated to Queen Margaret of Scotland. Locally there is no knowledge of the exact site or date of the old church, although a solid foundation 3 m from the south wall of the later church (NJ64NW0077) was encountered during grave digging in 1955. Within the graveyard is an interesting collection of 18th and 19th century grave monuments, notably the very similar Shand (1741) and Thomson (1767) tabletombs. There is a Copland baluster sundial, dated 1801, and a burial enclosure with sculptured details, dated 1674-5.
