Description
The Elyza Fraser Mausoleum was found to be in a critical state of decay and disrepair in the early 2000s. The Friends of Miss Elyza Fraser's Mausoleum group partnered with the North East Scotland Preservation Trust (NESPT) to organise the repair works. The works focused on bringing the historic structure back into good order, safeguarding it for future generations. NESPT dried-out the saturated stone structure of the cylindrical wall and dome roof, repointed the mortar both internally and externally, refurbished the iron gate at the mausoleum's entrance, and repaired and recoated the two oak doors at the entrance. NESPT also consolidated the surface of the plaques set into the internal face of the inset cylindrical wall, and addressed issues with the skylight capping the oculus in the dome granite roof. Masonry and Lime were procured to act as the principal contractors, with specialist sub-contractors for each element of the conservation-led works.
