Full Description
Castle built on an earlier motte and bailey. Nothing remains of the castle except a short stretch of earthen bank and some large stones. The raised bailey is retained by a drystone wall incorporating, in the southeast corner, a straight stretch of older masonry constructed of large stones with rubble filling bonded by lime mortar. This is almost certainly a part of the 16th century courtyard wall. Now no definite trace of a moat but a burn curving round the west side most likely occupies its course. The castle originally comprised of a tower and walled courtyard enclosing outbuildings and was surrounded by a moat. It was slowly demolished after 1759. The whole surface area is now used by farmer as a silage pit as well as general dump.
Period Notes
From 13thC onwards; demolished in 1647 by General David Leslie. Old notes state- first documentary proof 1544 though said to be built 1508; repaired 1600; pulled down c1759, which does not match.
