Full Description
Remains of a farmstead situated on a south facing slope on the north bank of the Burn of Milwaddoch. They comprise a range of buildings, aligned east-west and including a cottage, situated immediately north of a large enclosure. The farmstead is depicted as roofed on the OS 1st edition 6-inch map. It is recorded in the OS Name Book at which time it was occupied by a Mr J McHardy, and described as 'a small farmsteading consisting of dwelling house and offices, the property of A Leith Esq., Glen Kindie, Towie, Aberdeenshire'. It was abandoned before the end of the 19th century and it is shown as unroofed on the 2nd edition OS map. The remains were recorded by RCAHMS site visit in 1997. The cottage lies at the centre of the range and measures 12.4m by 5.4m transversely over grass-grown stone wall-footings 1m in thickness and 0.6m in height. There is an entrance midway along the south wall and a small, two-compartment outshot at the west end. Attached to the southwest corner of this outshot are the footings of a small building, measuring 5.2m by 4.4m. It has an entrance on the east, and a small pen is attached to the west wall. The east end of the range is a byre, measuring 13.7m by 4.1m transversely over stone wall-footings 0.6m in thickness and up to 0.5m in height, with at least two entrances on the south. On the north side a drainage ditch runs along the length of the range, while immediately to the south of the byre there is a midden hollow. South of the range is a trapezoidal enclosure, measuring about 40m by a maximum of 25m at the broader north end. It straddled a low river-terrace, which is surmounted in the interior by the remains of a stone wall. The northern half of the enclosure contains further subdivisions. Two circular stack stands, measuring about 3m in diameter, are visible immediately to the east of the lower-lying southern half of the enclosure. What may be the remains of a small building, largely defined by a subrectangular hollow measuring 6.3m by 2.6m are set against the wall of the enclosure on the north.
