Full Description
Remains of a farmstead. Upper Culquoich steading remained in use until earlier this century. Recorded by RCAHMS site visit in 1997. The farmhouse is now partly roofed and the steading has been largely demolished, but a bothy to the northwest of the farmhouse survives in excellent condition. The farmhouse is situated to the north of the steading and appears to have started life as a simple cottage, aligned northeast and southwest, with two ground-floor rooms and two above, and a central entrance on the southeast. By 1870, when it was depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map, the cottage had been remodelled on an L-plan with the addition of an extension to the north end of the northwest wall. An entrance in the northeast side of the extension appears to have become the main entrance at this time. Further additions in the re-entrant angle of the building appear to have been built between 1870 and 1902. The bothy is situated a short distance to the southwest of the farmhouse. Access could not be gained on the date of visit, but the interior contained a well-preserved brick-mounted cast-iron boiling pot. In 1870 the steading was U-shaped on plan but by 1902, however, the open northeast side of the court was partially blocked by the construction of a free-standing building, which, though unroofed, still survives to wall-head height (c2m-2.5m). The remainder of the steading has been demolished, but the footings of a horse-engine platform are visible at the southwest end of the original southeast wing. The OS Name Book describes Upper Culquoich, which at that time was occupied by a Mr Mitchell, as 'a farmsteading consisting of dwelling house, offices and garden, the property of A Leith Esq. of Glenkindie, Towie, Aberdeenshire'.
