Full Description

Remains of a sub-oval enclosure with another at NJ 4005 1361, situated in a hollow on a fairly steep hillside. A small stone stands upright on its north side. They are almost certainly stock enclosures and not stone circles as described by ONB. RCAHMS site visit 1999 recorded remains of a settlement and field system at the foot of the Glac of Barns, comprising a hut-circle and scatter of small cairns. The hut circle (NJ40091347) measures 8 m in diameter within a stony bank up to 1.8 m in thickness and 0.3 m high. At the site of the eastern 'stone circle'/stock enclosure (NJ 4005 1361) were the grass grown footings of a sub-rectangular building which measured circa 8.5 m north-south by 4.5 m wide internally, defined by footings 0.3 m high on all sides except the east where there was a scarp. No trace was found of the western 'stone circle (NJ 4003 1357) nor the sub-oval enclosure reported by the OS.
