Full Description
Remains of a farmstead, the farmhouse built on site of Old Castle of Brux. The OS 1st edition map shows a group of six buildings including two long ranges. Only the two long buildings are shown as roofed on the OS 2nd edition map. The northernmost of these (the only building now roofed) is the 19th century farmhouse which incorporates a laird's house dating from circa 1700. It stands on the northwest side of a yard which has an outbuilding on the northeast, and there are the remains of a stable block on the opposite side of the track to the southwest. This was a 5-bay house, of one and a half storeys, measuring 17.7m by 5.3m with mortared rubble walls. The original entrance was in the southeast, converted to a window in the 19th century with a new entrance made through a former window to the southwest. No original internal divisions remain. The roof rafters may be original but the roof is 19th century. There are two original window lights at either end of the upper floor. There are chimneys at each gable, that at the southwest end is deeper suggesting that this was the location of the kitchen. Although the fireplace here has been altered it has a late 17th century lintel. A now blocked fireplace at the back of the house slightly to the northeast of the original entrance indicates that the house was originally divided into at least three compartments. Other 19th century alterations included the insertion of a chimneystack in the middle of the house, and extension of the farmhouse to the southwest.
