Full Description
The site of St Neachtan's Church stands within a graveyard of later date. The church was removed at the end of the 17th century and there is now no trace. Graveyard enclosed with rubble-walls and cast-iron gates. Typical ancient burial ground terraced into the side of Kirk Hill, consisting of a rectangular area of raised ground enclosed by a low wall to create a higher ground level within. The retaining wall is collapsed in part to south. The burial ground was formerly hub of Coldstone parish prior to its amalgamation with Logie parish in late 18th century to from present Logie Coldstone parish centred upon Newkirk, which is equidistant between 2 ancient burial grounds of Logie and Coldstone. Within the churchyard (in use as the head of a grave) is an oval slab of whinstone with a Celtic cross inscribed on it (NJ40NW0005). Monuments within the churchyard include a recumbent graveslab of George Forbes, Master in the Royal Navy, who served for many years including at the Battle of Trafalgar, and a tall cross memorial for Sir John Farquharson K.C.B. of Corachree, Colonel with the Royal Engineers and Director-General of the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain and Ireland 1894 - 1898. The graveyard also contains the Commonwealth war grave of Corporal Donald Wright, Gordon Highlanders, who died 17 February 1915. A watching brief was carried out by MAS in 2015 during excavation of new foundations for two grave slabs, the Forbes memorial and a Laing memorial. No archaeological features or finds were observed during the works.
