Full Description

Remains of a cairn and enclosure. Ogston (1931) described a roughly quadrangular enclosure, and six small cairns, and on the west side of the enclosure a 'giant' cairn over 18m in diameter which stood on a platform 30.48m . To the north of the enclosure was a rubble wall extending downhill with other cairns. The large cairn is now covered in a heavy growth of whin. It has been inexpertly excavated revealing a short cist, now choked with debris. Much of the cairn material has now been removed. Other alleged cairns and banks lie within forest. RCAHMS site visit 1997 recorded the large cairn as circa 19.5m in diameter, with an overgrown cist in the centre, but found no other small cairns as previously reported in the vicinity. To the east, a hut-circle was recorded at NJ 4219 0698, measuring 5.7m in diameter, the bank up to 2m side and 0.3m high with a possible entrance in the southeast. HES survey in 2017 recorded the large cairn as about 25m in diameter and up to 1m high, formed of an outer kerb (of which three stones are visible on the west and northwest) and a very damaged inner cairn circa 18m in diameter and now no more than 0.3m high. The stone cist is made of both grey and red stone, the latter including the capstone. A later dyke over the east flank of the cairn forms the western boundary of Ogston's enclosure.
