Full Description
Remains of a castle, first mentioned in a charter of the Earl of Mar in 1268. It occupies a strong strategic position on one of the principal routes from Deeside to Donside. One of two significant strongholds of the Earls of Mar (along with Doldencha in Braemar) this was the principal stronghold of the lordship of Cromar. Later granted by the Crown to Sir John Rutherford of Tarland, Provost of Aberdeen (Rutherford was elected Provost on multiple occasions between 1483 and 1500. He died circa 1520). Thought to have been abandoned by 1565. The castle remains sit on an elevated area amid farm roads and ditches. Though indefinite, the foundations seem to disclose an irregular angled curtain wall without flanking towers, suggesting the site belongs to a group of early Scottish stone castles termed simple rectangular castles of enclosure, typical in the 13th Century.
