Full Description
Farmstead depicted on historic OS maps at which time it was named Bog. The 1st edition shows a U-plan steading, open to the south. To the west are a rectangular cottage and a square building and further west a garden enclosure with a small structure on its east side. North of the steading is a pound a sluice with a lade leading to the east wing of the steading. By the time of the 2nd edition a building had been added to the south end of the east wing of the steading, and a new T-plan house added to the southwest. Southeast of the steading is a sheepfold. Current maps indicate that the garden enclosures has since been removed, the pond infilled and further additions made to the steading. The cottage west of the steading is Listed (Category B), and is a typical late 18th century 'improved cottage' which is now used as a storehouse for the neighbouring mid 19th century farm. It is a single storey cottage of three bays, built of random rubble yellow sandstone with squared lintels, rybats and quoins. The central door is flanked by large rectangular 24-pane windows and the roof has coped skews and gable end stacks. A Level 1 Standing Building Survey of the steading buildings was carried out in May 2017 by Murray Archaeological Services prior to conversion to domestic use. The original farmhouse is 18th century, and the steading shown on the 1st edition OS map must have replaced some earlier buildings. The addition shown on the 2nd edition OS map to the south end of the east wing was originally a stable with a hay loft at the west end, and possibly a cart bay at the east end. Alterations are shown by a blocked fireplace and sawn off joists for a loft floor. A building added to the south of the west range has a stone dated 1922 and initialled RWL, probably referring to the then owner of the estate Richard Lewis of Melgum, and it also shows signs of interior alterations.
