Full Description
Memorial, commemorating an RAF pilot killed when a Hurricane crashed nearby in 1941. During the stay of 17 Squadron at Bogs of Mayne airfield, in July 1941, two of its Hurricanes collided mid-air outside Garmouth. One pilot survived, but the second pilot died in the crash. The memorial (opposite Connagedale Farm) was erected by local residents, and is in the form of a small white cross with a white fence either side. A plaque at the base of the cross is inscribed: In Memory of Sgt Leonard May / Died in a Hurricane crash at this spot on 8 July 1941 / 'Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose./ But young men think it is, and we were young.' In front of the plaque is a smaller unpainted cross believed to be made from part of the hurricane. One aircraft crashed at approximately NJ 330 640 (NJ36SW0175).
