Full Description
Remains of a house built in the 18th century by Patrick Steuart, associated steading and site of gardens, depicted on the OS historic maps. The 1st edition shows the house with, to the north of the Core Burn, a rectangular walled garden and a quadrangular steading. The layout is essentially the same on the 2nd edition although a rectangular building had been added in the steading court. The house was described in the OS Name Book as a 'commodious dwelling house with a court of offices, garden and lawn attached', then the property of Andrew Stewart Esquire. Documentary evidence suggests that it was altered or rebuilt between 1794 and 1845 as it is recorded as a 'modern building' in the New Statistical Account of 1845. Trial trenching evaluation was carried out by AOC Archaeology in January 2019 on the area north of the burn. Nine trenches were excavated and a number of features recorded including small pits and stone walls. Measured survey of the steading remains (part of which had already been removed) was undertaken prior to its removal. Subsequent watching brief in January and February 2019 was carried out during removal of the remains of the steading and topsoil clearance of the site. Additional features identified included the remains of several stone walls, pits and drains and the fragmented remains of cobbled surfaces, culverts and wall foundations, some of which were related to the former offices and designed garden of the house. Finds from the investigations including a range of bottle bases. To the north west of the house ruins is the site of a dovecot (NJ36SE0148), depicted on the 1st edition OS map but not shown on the 2nd edition OS map.
