Full Description

Famstead, hamlet and site of manor. A manor house was said to have stood in this vicinity in late medieval times but the exact location is unknown. On the 1846 OS map Auchenhalrig consisted of a farm in the north which was orientated northeast-southwest, with three projecting ranges to the east. To the south was a small hamlet of about twenty houses, with numerous small enclosures, some of which were probably gardens. By 1888 a new farmstead was built, on a rectangular plan, with a mill pond to the southwest and lade leading towards the farm. Another mill lead is visible in the south leading from a large pond towards one of the building lying to the southeast of the farm. The older farmstead is no longer depicted. Photographic survey of The Barn was carried out in 2014 prior to proposed development. There was further photographic recording in 2015.
