Full Description

Former church, converted to use as a crematorium in the 1990s. The church was built in 1886 in a Gothic style by A. Marshall Mackenzie of Matthews and Mackenzie, Aberdeen. It replaced a previous chapel on the same site that was built in 1785, but became unsafe. It is constructed from rubble, with tooled ashlar dressings. A centre pointed-headed entrance in the East gable is flanked by plate-traceried windows under a continuous hoodmould with ball flower stops. There are double leaf plank doors with decorative cast iron hinges, a large hoodmoulded wheel window in the gable above the entrance and an apex bellcote. The long north and south elevations are 4-bay, and lit by 3-light cusped windows under pointed headed hoodmoulds. There is lattice pane glazing, and a low pulvinated string course encircles church. There are squat clasping buttresses, rhones supported by masked brackets and slate roofs. There is a projecting rear vestry with a canted West gable, with each face lit by triple cusped lights and a moulded and pointed headed entrance to the north and south of the vestry.

Period Notes
