Full Description

St Mary's Well. It stands immediately outside the North-East wall of the burial ground and Mausoleum of St Mary's Chapel (NJ35NW0001). It is oval, and is constructed of stone, measuring 1.7 metres (5.6 feet) by 1 metre (3.3 feet). Built into the 1844 wall beside the well is a Gothic pointed-headed monument that protrudes above the wallhead, with a pointed-headed niche that contains one of the old stone vessels. There is the remnants of a chain attached to the corner of the vessel that would have been attached to a drinking cup. The well was believed to cure whooping cough and eye and joint diseases.

Period Notes
Associated with the medieval St Mary's Chapel. The monument is built into a wall constructed in 1844, but the date of the construction of the monument itself is unknown. Listed designation given on 09/11/1987.
