Full Description

Tollhouse at the North-West side of Fochabers Bridge (NJ35NW0012). It was built in circa 1830 by George Burn, and greatly enlarged in circa 1983. It would appear to have replaced an earlier building. It is a single-storey tollhouse over a raised basement, with a roadside entrance in the 2-bay South elevation. It is constructed from tooled ashlar, with polished ashlar dressings and a rubble-built raised basement. The modern portion extends to the North. It is harled, with simulated sandstone dressings. There is a projecting canted bay with three 6-pane casement windows. The doors and windows are hoodmoulded, with multi-pane fenestration. There are 2 coped ridge stacks and a shallow piended slate roof, although it is gabled to the North-West and South-East.

Period Notes
