Full Description

Monument to the Duchess of Gordon and site of a cross. The name Ranald's Cross given to the highest point of the hill is traditionally derived form a cross erected to commemorate the killing of a chief called Ranald. There is now no trace of a cross. The Duchess of Gordon's monument was erected on the supposed site in 1887. There is a plaque on the monument inscribed 'This cairn is erected in memory of Frances Harriet, Duchess of Richmond, 1887'. Also known as Whiteash Cairn. The monument has been used as an Ordnance Survey trigonometrical survey intersected station (sighting point), as depicted on the 5th edition OS map.
