Full Description

Remains of a small farmstead depicted on the OS 1st edition consisting of a single building and small enclosure. On the 2nd edition only the building, now disused, is depicted. The remains of this three compartment building and a square enclosure still survive. An unknown fort, however, is also shown somewhere in the vicinity of Backhill on an early County map of 1822 and 1831. No further information on this feature is available. Visited by RCAHMS in 1990. A field survey was carried out in 2009 by CFA Archaeology prior to a proposed wind farm, which recorded the remains of a grass covered, two-compartment building (0.5 metres high). The enclosure (surviving to a height of 0.3 metres high) was also recorded by field survey, although the west wall has now been destroyed.
