Full Description
Remains of a limekiln. Little now remains of the lime kiln that stood on the northeast side of the Burn of Parkbeg. It is depicted on the 1st edition OS map of 1872, but was disused by the 1905 2nd edition. Visited by RCAHMS in 1990. Prior to a quarry extension the area of the kiln was excavated by machine under an archaeological watching brief by Alba Archaeology in May 2010. A considerable amount of the kiln still survived under the ground, although filled with rubbish. A standing building survey was subsequently undertaken to record the remains prior to demolition. This revealed that the kiln had probably been built in the late 1840s or 1850s, and probably went out of use within 40-60 years. The kiln had seen at least one major repair during its use, possibly due to the kiln expanding caused by excessive heat combined with its relatively poor construction.
