Full Description
Remains of a parish church, founded by James VI, and a graveyard still in use. This former parish church was built in 1618 at the expense of King James VI, but replaced by a new church in 1793 (NJ35SW0055). A roughly square rubble walled burial ground encloses the remains of the church, and contains 17th, 18th and 19th century and later tombstones. Only the west gable of the church remains intact. It was probably of a T-plan form, and has a bell-finialled apex bellcote without the bell. The bell made at Elgin in 1658, it was removed due to safety fears in 1980 and placed at Boharm Church, near Keith. Portions of the east wall were remodelled in the earlier 19th century, possibly by William Robertson of Elgin, as a burial enclosure for the families of Arndilly and Auchlankart. There are mural plaques in this burial enclosure to MacDowall Grants of Arndilly and Stewart (or Steuart) and Stewart-Gordons of Auchlunkart. The old wall footings are visible at the base of its south wall. A memorial plaque dated 1618 lies against the church wall. Monumental inscriptions within the churchyard were recorded by the Moray Burial Ground Research Group in 2005 and 2006. There is a marble war memorial plaque set into the outer churchyard wall next to the gate to the memory of men from the parish who fell in the First World War.
Period Notes
The church was built in 1618, with some remodelling in the early-19th century to create the burial enclosure. There are tombstones from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
