Full Description

Steading, still in use, and B-listed farmhouse. The present farmsteading is an expanded version of the 1779 layout, but dates almost wholly from the 19th century. However, behind the main house, and parallel to it, is an open-fronted three-bay shed which, although much modified, is probably a remnant of the 18th century steading. The oldest part of the farmhouse dates from the early-17th century and is likely to have been a small plain three-storey tower. This was truncated and extended to its present two-storey layout in circa 1724, and is now part of a complex of six buildings which still stand. It is a West-facing two-storey building, with an irregular wide four-bay front. It is constructed from harled rubble, with tooled granite margins and dressings. An off-centre door is masked by a modern glazed porch, and there is irregular fenestration to the rear. The end gables are crowstepped, and is topped by coped end and ridge stacks. It is now covered with corrugated asbestos, the house was roofed in thick Knockfergan slates until circa 1950, and its dressed and pegged roof timbers were noted as being in excellent condition when visited in 1995. There is a single-storey, two-bay wing to the rear of the house with an end stack and slate roof. Inside, there are fielded panelled window shutters in the North end of house. Pittyvaich was the home of World War I war poet Mary Symon, and was also formally owned by the Stewarts of Pittyvaich.
