Full Description

Road bridge, built in 1715 crossing the River Don. It is a semi-circular rubble arch bridge, a single span of 70ft, with a steeply humped carriageway. Over the southern keystone is a tablet inscribed 'John Forbes of Inverernan 1715'. The bridge is rubble built with voussoirs and a coped parapet, with concrete buttresses to the North, and large areas of non-traditional cement pointing. Also known as Poldhullie Bridge, it is a rare survivor of an early style which continued into the early 18th century and is one of only two local bridges which survived the great flood, of 'Muckle Spate' of 1829. John Forbes was a bailie of Kildrummy and close associate of John Erskine, the Earl of Mar, who led the Jacobites against British Government forces at Sherriffmuir in November 1715. Forbes died in 1716 in Carlisle Castle where he was being held prisoner, awaiting execution.
