Full Description

Westerton Croft is depicted on the OS 1st edition map as an L-plan building lying on the northern side of a track with an attached rectangular enclosure to the north. On the 2nd edition map the croft is now rectangular with the enclosure to the south of it. Another small enclosure lies to its west, also south of the track, with a small building in its northeast corner. Today only the remains of the croft building are depicted as ruined. A building survey carried out by MAS in June 2013 recorded the remains of two buildings. Building 1 (that shown on the 2nd edition OS map) post dates 1867 (the 1st edition map) but was built in two phases, the east part added to an existing building. The original building was rectangular with a central doorway in the south wall. The later addition to the west contained two rooms with a doorway in the south wall of the west room. It was built of locally sourced rubble, with better stone used in the earlier structure. Overall it measures 23 m long and circa 5.4 m externally: the walls survive to a maximum height of 1.2 m. The second building, to the south, is not shown on the 2nd edition. It appears to have been constructed in the angle of the walls of an enclosure shown on the 2nd edition and so appears to have been built after 1900. It measures circa 6.5 m east to west, by 4.5 m and is built of rubble stone surviving to four courses. To the west of the ruins, some 20 m of an east-west wall appears to be the north wall of the enclosure shown on the OS 1st edition map. East of the buildings a line of stones running roughly east-west may mark the edge of the track shown on the 2nd edition OS map.
