Full Description

The remains of a circular lime-kiln stand on the edge of a wood to the northeast of Coul of Newe. It is depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. It is a small squat kiln in good condition, standing 2.4m in height at the front, and with an external diameter of 5.5m. The walls are 0.8m thick and the bowl 2.9m in diameter. The draw hole, 2.1m in height, 1.2 m wide at the top and 2m wide at ground level, is rather crudely constructed with four large flat stone slabs used as lintels. There has been some minor collapse of stonework on the right exterior of the kiln. The 2002-3 survey of limekilns of Upper Donside noted that this was one of only two farm kilns with signs of lime mortar used in its construction.
