Full Description
Former mill, dating from the 18th century and later, fire damaged and restored, then later partly converted to residential use. Associated former mill house and farmstead to the west (NJ31SE0046). The corn mill is depicted on the 2nd edition OS map (1867), with a mill pond to the north from which a lade leads to the mill. There is a group of other buildings around it, consisting of a rectangular building to the southwest, a U-plan steading to the northeast open to the south, kennels to the east of the steading, a sluice to the northwest of the steading on the mill lade, with various other rectangular buildings and enclosures to the north and the east. On the current OS edition map the L-plan mill remains, but the previous outbuilding to the southwest is no longer shown. Only parts of the original steading survive, incorporated into the residential property Mill Cottage, No. 4 Mill of Newe. The former kennels have been altered and are now the residential property No. 3 Mill Of Newe. The previous buildings and enclosures in the north and east are no longer shown, with two residential properties shown instead, Nos. 1 and 2 Mill Of Newe. The mill pond, dam and sluice do not survive and the area of it is now wooded. The former mill building is unusually large for this part of Aberdeenshire, being a 2- and 3-storey, L-plan, gabled and piended building, partly converted to dwellings, with an integral kiln incorporating a revolving ventilator with a polygonal slate base, and an ostrich vane. The mill lade would have been fed from the Water of Deochry. The mill is sited to the east of Mill of Newe House (NJ31SE0046), at south edge of Newe policies. The mill was later (2006) in use as a fish hatchery for the Don District Salmon Fishery Board, with the internal wheel and other workings having been removed prior to 1976. The mill building later became disused and was sold by Candacraig Estate in 2020. Described in the Aberdeenshire OS Name Books, 1865-1871 volume 81 (OS1/1/81/73) as: 'An ordinary meal mill, kiln etc with the necessary machinery, driven by water power. also a dwelling house offices garden etc attached and a farm the property of Sir Charles Forbes of Newe Castle'.The tenant at that time was a Mr John Wattie.
