Full Description
Remains of a souterrain which was discovered in 1859, and excavated at that time by A Walker. A large quantity of charcoal and bones were found under a smoke hole and other finds included fragments of wood, potsherds and a fragment of quern. The main chamber originally measurd about 14m in length, up to 4.1m in breadth and 2.2.m in height. Following the excavation it was restored by clay puddling and covered by earth mound and trees. OS site visit 1968 noted that the souterrain had been mutilated by a farm road and house, also with a tree on top. The lower part of the south side of the chanmber may have been incorporated into the foundations and basal courses of the house extension. The entrance is blocked, and it is now only roofed at short passage entrance.
