Full Description
Remains of three lime kilns, recorded during survey of limekilns of Upper Donside 2002-3. The three kilns (at NJ 3358 1816, NJ 3357 1815 and NJ 3357 1812) are located on the lower side of the road next to the quarries at the Balloch. They are small kilns, circa 4.8 m in external diameter with bowl diameters of 1.9 m. All three have been reduced to low, circular, turf and grass covered mounds, with a gap where their draw holes stood. They do not appear on either the OS 1st or 2nd edition maps or the estate map of 1864. As quarry kilns they may have been built earlier than the farm kilns of the area.
