Full Description

Begg's House, circa 1800 or earlier. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan traditional farmhouse with stone-pedimented dormerheaded windows. Comprises part of the farmstead depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. On the 1st edition, then named Badaneoin, it comprised two groups of buildings to east and west of a track leading to the north. The west group comprised a U-shaped steading and five smaller buildings, the east group comprised six buildings including two long ranges. By the time of the 2nd edition, west of the track the steading now incorporated two of the smaller buildings, whilst one building to the south had been removed and another appears to have been added to the east. East of the track, again parts of one of the larger buildings have been demolished, one building lies partly unroofed and a new L-shaped range has been added to the north. Although depicted on current OS maps as in use, RCAHMS field visit in 1998 recorded that the western farmhouse of Badenyon and its associated steading (NJ 3400 1901) have been abandoned, and the house is falling into dereliction. A threshing machine in the western wing of the steading was originally driven by a horse-engine outside the west wall, but much of the walkway has been removed.
