Full Description

Remains of a small farmstead and enclosure, depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps when it was named Sloggie. On the OS 1st edition map the farmstead comprised a rectangular building - a cottage - with L-shaped range to the north forming three sides to an open court to the east of which was a rectangular enclosure. A pond is depicted to the north. By the time of the 2nd edition the two buildings have been joined to form a U-shaped steading to the southeast to which has been added a new building. The millpond, a mill dam and sluice are shown to the north. The site was visited by the RCAHMS in 1997. The farmstead, situated at the edge of a broad river-terrace on the west side of the Burn of Sluggie, was occupied well into the 20th century. The south wing of the steading was the farm cottage of which the stone walls survived up to 1.8m in height. The rectangular garden of the cottage lies immediately to the east. The west part of the steading has comprised a byre, whilst the north was was occupied by a threshing barn, with walls up to 2.0m in height. On the north side of the barn there is a wheel-pit, which is linked to a pond about 30m to the northwest by a partly slab-covered lade. The small building to the southeast survives only as low, grass-covered footings.
