Full Description

Remains of a house and walled garden, built circa 1809 by Lieutenant-General Nathaniel Forbes of the Hoonourable East India Company, the house demolished circa 1945. It was built on the site of an earlier house described as an 'old castle', of which all that remains are four vaulted chambers at the southern end of the garden. A ballroom that had been erected on top of vaults is now demolished. To the north of the house is a large, rectangular walled garden built in circa 1810 (NJ31NW0137). North of the garden are the remains of holding ponds and sluices with lades that held water from a spring approximately 1 mile away. To the northeast is an early 19th century dovecot (NJ31NW0138), and to the southeast of the house is Auchernach Cottage, also early 19th century (NJ31NW0139). A pair of lodges cover the entrance driveway to the southeast (NJ31NW0140).
