Full Description

Remains of a water mill and lime kiln, depicted on the OS 1st edition map. The 1888 2nd edition OS map also shows a sluice and mill dam to the south. RCAHMS site visit 1998 recorded the mill surviving to gable height, with entrances in the northeast end and northwest side, and the wheel-pit at the southwest end of the southeast side. The lade no longer survives, but a short tail-race extends southeast from the wheel-pit into the adjacent burn-gully. The northeast side of the kiln has collapsed or has been robbed, but elsewhere its site is marked by shallow depression surrounded by a stony rim with an overall diameter of about 6m. Field visit 2002 as part of a survey of lime kilns of Upper Donside recorded the kiln surviving as a shallow depression 6m in diameter with the outline of the bowl reduced to ground level visible under the turf. Most of the stonework has been removed.
