Full Description

Remains of three structures in the gully of a small tributary of the Lary Burn recorded during site visit in July 2013. They comprise: 1) a rectangular building platform with slight turf and stone walls measures 6.4 by 3.7m. 2) a stone-lined oval pit measuring 4.0 x 3.3m and 0.8m deep. 3) a shed-like structure built into the south side of the gully, measuring 4.1m by 0.7m and up to 2m high. The bulk of this structure had collapsed. It was built of coursed rubble, with a large wood framed doorway, and the remnants of a corrugated iron roof. It is likely to be the remains of an illicit still, possibly operated by the local Gillanders family, said to have been whisky smugglers.
