Full Description

Remains of a farmstead that is depicted on the 1st edition OS map. It shows a rectangular building (farmhouse), a U-plan steading, and a garden. RCAHMS field visit in 1998 recorded that the steading, which comprised buildings ranged around an east-facing yard, had been destroyed by quarrying and track construction and the farmhouse has been overplanted with trees. The farmhouse walls stand up to 4.5 m in height at the southeast gable. A limekiln is shown (NJ 3313 0979) on the maps about 110 m south of the steading but was not located on the date of visit. Remains of the kiln, set into the low bank on the west side of a forestry track within woodland, were recorded in site visit as part of a survey of limekilns of Upper Donside (2002-3). It was a small kiln circa 4.5 m in external diameter, with a bowl 2.5 m in diameter. The outline of the collapsed bowl and draw hole with some structure is visible.
