Full Description

Remains of a number of buildings surviving as grass grown footings within a conifer plantation. A 1766 plan of the lands of Glencarvie depicts about thirty-eight buildings strung out across the lower, southeast-flank of Craig of Bunzeach, roughly along the 400m contour. This area has since been incorporated into a large Forestry Commission plantation and forestry operations, including ploughing and the construction of a road, appear to have destroyed many of the buildings. Surviving buildings were recorded by RCAHMS field visit in 2002. A building at NJ 3691 0892 is situated in a clearing immediately south of the forest road and measures 10.5 m by 3.8 m over grass-grown wall-footings 1 m in thickness and 0.5 m in height. It has been identified with that shown on the 1766 plan at the southwest end of the group of buildings. Immediately north of the ride that carries the electricity power-line (at circa NJ36990896) at least three small huts have survived the forestry ploughing. They range between 4 m and 6 m in length but are all circa 3.7 m wide and can be identified with those shown on the 1766 plan as the Shealings of Brughs and Culquharry. Further structures observed in the dense conifers on a steep slope to the northeast could not be plotted at the time of the visit. Forestry Commission have recorded a number of shielings and other buildings at: NJ37550982, NJ37550978, NJ37530976, NJ57530973, NJ37510972, NJ37530969, NJ37470964 (possible 'farmstead' with enclosure, NJ37370951 (possible long-house platform), NJ37330946, NJ37270932, NJ37240925, NJ37170916, NJ37340952.
