Full Description

Parts of a line of concrete anti-tank blocks are visible along the coast to the northeast of the lighthouse at Covesea Skerries - see also NJ27SW0021 for continuation further east. Some are now partially covered in sand. Many of the blocks were unstable or overturned by the sea in 1942. Some of the blocks between the Skerries and Lossiemouth bear graffiti on the top of the blocks carved into the soft cement during construction. Generally the lettering refers to the Polish and Welsh soldiers who constructed them. A few have the date 1940. A copper alloy Polish Army Eagle cap badge is pressed into the top of one of the blocks. Four pillboxes (Type 24 variants) have also been recorded along the section of defences between the lighthouse and Lossiemouth, two on this western half of the beach although only that in front of the lighthouse survives (NJ27SW0022). Site visit undertaken in August 2022 as part of the SCAPE coastal zone assessment survey.
